One of the most irritating requirements for an ABAPer is to make modifications in the SAP Standard screens. It makes complete sense from a user point of view and still, they are sometimes so difficult to achieve, technically. SAP realized it and they developed SAP Screen Personas (what a name).

I will post about the SAP Screen Personas and how they can be used through a series of post and starting with the Introduction.

SAP Screen Personas (called Personas hereafter) provides customer flexibility to personalize and transform the SAP standard screens in SAP Dynpro or Web Dynpro to suit their business requirement. The changes still need to be done by developers but it is easy and fast to build and deploy.

Persona can be installed as an addon without any extra cost. Since it is an add-on to the backend system, no additional security or data access governance is required.

Let’s see how does it work. If we call a transaction with Persona, the Dynpro will open the same old normal screen but after it loads, SAP also loads the “mask” or the Persona screen. So, a user sees the screen elements which are personalized as per his/her requirement. Depending on the requirement, several Personas can be built for the same transaction for different user groups. So the focus in the Persona is the user group. We will see in later chapters, how easily this can be done.

You can practically change anything from the screen. You can remove the toolbars, rename a description, remove a certain tab in a tabbed screen, show additionals fields in the screen and all this can be done copying the standard program to a custom program. Of course, there are certain limits of screen modification possible through Persona but they are practically never required. Since it is all just screen rendering over the top of the standard screens, we must understand that nothing is really deleted or removed from the screen. However, users will never know the difference. I do hope you all are now curious about knowing more and will follow our blog for more details.

  1. Bhavesh, Good article! Waiting for more details in next posts….

  2. From the old Personas (2.0) to the new (3.0) there is much difference, mainly in the simplified techniques of development. Now the ABAPers have nothing to complain.
Continue with the material. It’s getting better. =)

    • Hello Daniel. Thanks for the comment. Indeed Personas 3.0 is better than 2.0 and I guess SAP is only supporting Personas 3.0.

  3. How do i install SAP screen personas in my system , we are on SAP Net weaver version (EHP6.0),

also can you provide an example with screen shots..

    • I will provide some screenshots of the application and usage. For Installing Personas you need SAP Kernel 7.42 or newer and SAP Basis (SAP_BASIS) 7.40.

  4. Hello all at SAPYard,

I appreciate your articles very much though there is hardly time to follow all interesting content. Especially your simplified desriptions, avoiding SAP technical language, are suitable to me to quickly get an imagination what it is all about, including information SAP does not tell in the first step.

I already read some official articles about Screen Personas and laid it aside, Now I am curoius again about what you will tell us about the impementaion and the benefits of it.

Please keep on with your helpful work!

    Regards
    Gerhard

    • Hello Gerhard
Thanks for your comment. Yes, there are lots of official content on Personas. OpenSAP has fabulous courses on them. We have wondered in past how can we add value and we realise that our take will be a consultant’s take …. not the product owners. So, we will list down the issues, what we frequently use and how we troubleshoot the problems. This is our ideology and that’s will be our value addition.
